Full Tilt Poker is one of the top three online poker rooms on the Internet. It hosts tens of thousands of poker players on thousands of poker cash games and tournaments. It accepts players from all over the globe, including the USA, and is endorsed by top poker players the likes of Phil Ivey, Erik Seidel, and Chris Ferguson.
Phil Ivey explains that his approach to poker is simple – you can learn all you want and seek advice, but at the poker tables you have to forget it. Phil says that he learned poker by playing poker. He says that even though there are many resources on poker such as books, tutorials etc., the problem is that when a player plays according to what he’s learned he’s playing like some else, or worse – like everyone else.
There’s no right way or wrong way to play poker and everyone has their own style and approach. Take what you can from others and add it to your own style. Some players rely on math in their poker game – making the right decisions based on pot odds and winning odds, but relying solely on that method can only take you so far. The fact is, you’re not playing against a machine – you’re playing against a human player. Even if all the odds are against you, you can still figure out if the person you’re playing against has a hand, or if you can make a bet that’ll push him out of the pot. Sometimes it’s the other way around – the odds may be in your favor, but your gut feeling tells you otherwise. Developing a read only comes through play.
Don’t take people’s advice too seriously. It might distract you when you’re trying to get a read on someone. Too much math, odds and probabilities block your intuition and can make you forget you’re playing against someone, and that you’re trying to figure out that kind of hand they have or what they’re going to do. Are they tight, loose, or aggressive? Will they fold a bet or re-raise? These are the things you should focus on during play.
Poker is NOT about the cards. Poker is about players and situations. Many times in poker you must take a chance in order to advance. They may work or they may not work, but you have to be happy with your decisions. Analyze sessions after you finish a hand. Think about what you did right and what you did wrong, and try to learn from your mistakes. Just because something you tried didn’t work doesn’t mean you were wrong to try it. You must learn poker by playing. Read poker tips and advice, talk to friends and colleagues, but at the end of the day trust your instincts and develop your own game.
