Some say the WPT is not what it used to be, but apparently it still attracts a high profile poker crowd and it still manages to garner prize-pools beyond everyday guys’ wildest imaginations. The shortest route to a WPT event leads through Full Tilt Poker. Starting December 1st 2009 and right up till February 28th 2010, Full Tilt Poker will host a bunch of WPT qualifiers, all of which will award players $12,000 prize packages. Obviously, these packages include travel and accommodation costs on top of the buy-in and maybe even a little spending money on the side.
Direct access WPT satellites run every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, and they cost $500+$35, $300+$22 and $1,000+$60 respectively. The two more expensive ones give away two prize packages while the $322 one awards only one.
These buy-ins may obviously appear steep to most regulars, but sub qualifiers run for these events too, so basically with a little bit of luck and tons of poker skill, you can win a seat in them for small change. If you buy into the satellites directly, you’ll also gain access to a freeroll which rewards its winner with a seat in the WPT Celebrity invitational.
Package winners will be allowed to pick the event they’ll take part in. One option is the WPT LA Poker Classic, which takes place on February 26th. Last year, the prize-pool shot up to $6.6 million in this event, so there’s obviously plenty of loot going around there. Some of the best players in the world took part, including Full Tilt’s own Chris Ferguson, Greg Mueller and Nick Schulman. The other option is the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star event which takes place on March 8th. You shouldn’t worry about the size of the prize-pool in this event either. Last year, winner Steve Brecher took home more than $1 million.

Though many found Phil Ivey’s 7th place finish at the 2009 WSOP final table disappointing, the fact remains: his WSOP run was a formidable one, and had it not been for a couple up slip-ups, we may well have seen a different champ.
If The WSOP is just around the corner, but for many Vegas is a very long way a way; a visit to Full Tilt Poker could make it that much closer.
